Living Allowance

AmeriCorps is a national service program and members receive what’s called a living allowance. The stipend is paid every two weeks during your service and is always the same dollar amount.  

Calculating the Hourly Equivalent

To calculate the hourly equivalent rate, we take the total annual living allowance and divide it by the total number of hours a member commits to serve.

Your Weeks May Vary, but Your Check Will Not 

Most of our AmeriCorps members serve at local schools. During the school year, there are about 30 school release days (when school is not in session). That means you’ll have many weeks when you’ll serve fewer hours than you are normally scheduled. Because your living allowance is paid in equal installments, your check will not be smaller the weeks your schedule is reduced.  

Similarly, members who serve at local nonprofits and public agencies, can expect to have a reduced schedule during weeks with holidays and observances. Although you will serve fewer hours those weeks, your check will remain the same!
