New Certification to Become a Home Energy Auditor with the Home Energy Initiative

Nationwide, the average household spends about 3.5% of their monthly income on home energy costs, but in Minnesota some families are paying 20-30%. Home energy is any energy source used by a household for purposes including electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, propane, wood, etc. Anytime this energy is used we are releasing carbon into the air, which is one of the primary drivers of climate change.

The Home Energy Initiative of Climate Impact Corps launched last year to help households reduce their energy burdens by promoting household energy efficiency and solar energy. Members of the Home Energy Initiative support the Weatherization Assistance Program, which is a federal program that helps income-eligible families get a free energy audit and home energy upgrades.

"Serving with the Home Energy Initiative is really rewarding,” said Dylan Kelly, Director of Climate Programs. “Every day members help families to save energy and also help ensure their homes are safe, healthy places to live. It’s a great opportunity because while you’re giving back to your community, you also have the ability to earn a career credential that will set you up for good-paying jobs.”

Beginning in the 2022-23 service year, Home Energy members will have the option to earn the Building Performance Institute Building Analyst certification at no cost. This credential prepares members to launch a career in the green building sector and earn $20+ an hour as an entry-level Home Energy Auditor. “We’re really excited about this,” said Kelly, “learning about green energy and starting as home energy auditor can prepare you for so many different pathways within the green jobs market.”

After just one year of service and completing the certification, members will be prepared to launch into a variety of job opportunities as listed on the Green Buildings Career Map. This resource is a great way to visualize how you can advance in the industry after starting as a Home Energy Auditor.

While serving, Home Energy members receive:

  • A stipend of $1,100 every two weeks

  • Free individual health insurance (monthly premium 100% paid)

  • Up to an additional $6,495 for tuition or student loans

  • Child care assistance – based on family size and income

The positions are 40 hours a week with opportunities beginning in August, October, and January. All members serve through July 2023. Individuals should apply by August 10th to begin service in August.
